Artist Kim VanDerHoek paints the landscape from an above-the-earth perspective that allows the viewer to have a new experience with the world around them. The paintings are done in her signature style with loose strokes that allow the patchwork of the city come to life even from an elevated view.

“The memory of seeing landscapes or city scenes is the force that inspires me to paint,” says the artist. “I strive to create work that includes the unique characteristics of an identifiable place but with a dreamlike quality of a moment remembered.”
Her work has a foundation based on realism, but she adds in some abstraction. “You’ll see a lot of texture as well as multiple layers of thin and thick paint,” explains VanDerHoek. “When I select a scene, it’s critical that the subject have the potential for a dynamic design. I’ll often move, add, subtract or otherwise change elements to strengthen the composition. Through the use of color, light and texture, I’m able to further enhance the structure and highlight areas I want the viewer to focus on.

VanDerHoek is represented by Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia, and Charleston, South Carolina. July 5 through September 2, VanDerHoek will participate in the Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach, California. —
